ENTITY

Who are you and what do you do in your band?

Kyle Braun, I play drums in Entity.

When/where was your band formed?

Adam and I started jamming in 2012 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Why did you choose to play Death Metal?

We all just really love the style and it comes out naturally.

How do you compose your music? Does only one guy do everything or does everyone contribute?

Lately we all have been contributing to the writing process. Normally we will jam out riffs and come up with Ideas we like, and just structure it from there.

Tell us about your lyrics, writing, inspiration etc.

The main themes in our lyrics are Death, Demons, Fear, The human condition, and Torture. Inspiration comes from everything.

Is there an ideology behind your band?

Im not really sure how to answer that. No we don't have an idealogy behind the band, we just like to play music.

How do you see the state of Death Metal music these days in your country and in general?

Its cool, its definitely still around just not as much of it. At least the kind of death metal that I mainly like to listen to… there is an abundance of tech death in Canada right now though.

What are your long term plans as a band? What do you want to achieve?

We want to tour as much as possible and as many places that we can. We are working on our first full length right now, which will be a big thing for us.

Name an other Death Metal band from your country that everyone should hear.

There are lots but Sabbatory, Xul, Vathek and Dissolution are a few.

ILLUSIONS DEAD

Who are you and what do you do in your band?

This is Johannes, the vocalist, guitarist and songwriter of Illusions Dead.

When/where was your band formed?

Me and Akseli, our drummer, started playing together in 2009 with a different guitarist and bassist. We all went to the same school at the time.

Why did you choose to play Death Metal?

What we play is not so much a matter of choice, but something that happens naturally. It's what we listen to, what style allows us to best express ourselves, and what we enjoy playing the most. Death metal is an important part of our sound, but there are other elements as well.

How do you compose your music? Does only one guy do everything or does everyone contribute?

The majority of songs have all come from me, with everyone essentially writing their own parts according to the general idea. Some of the stuff I write alone, and some songs have been composed just by playing together: jamming, trial and error. Writing collectively is by far the most enjoyable thing to do, because you end up influencing and being influenced by your band mates in what you write, and that probably shows as better cohesion in the results as well. Sometimes I have music inside me that I have to write down the way it's coming to me, and the complexities involved with collective writing would only end up hindering it.

Tell us about your lyrics, writing, inspiration etc.

Dark, hateful and incomprehensible things find an outlet in band quite instinctively. It's cathartic. Still, it's important to maintain a balance between light and dark. Music works perfectly as a medium for expressing things that are not normally allowed to be expressed freely, and also cannot simply be contained. Sometimes that includes positive things.

Is there an ideology behind your band?

Our music expresses something more elemental than ideology. It's never a soapbox for spreading any agenda.

How do you see the state of Death Metal music these days in your country and in general?

Death metal has had a massive boom in the last eight or so years, and while not all of it has been entirely healthy, the movement has also spawned or unearthed an amplitude of fantastic stuff. Worldwide, it seems that death metal has been reaching into corners of the world where it hasn't been heard before.

What are your long term plans as a band? What do you want to achieve?

My personal goal is to record many great albums, and play many great gigs.

Name an other Death Metal band from your country that everyone should hear.

The best Finnish death metal band that has ever been, and will ever be, is Demilich. Currently, I think the Finnish black metal scene is the leading one in the world in terms of sheer amount of fantastic bands and albums. A special shout-out to Vitsaus (record more stuff, I know you have material!)

DEFORMATORY

Who are you and what do you do in your band?

Hey! This is Charlie, and I'm the vocalist/guitarist for Deformatory.

When/where was your band formed?

Deformatory officially formed in 2010. We're from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Why did you choose to play Death Metal?

All members - past and present - are passionate about extreme metal. For us, there was no other choice. We love death metal way too much to be playing anything else.

How do you compose your music? Does only one guy do everything or does everyone contribute?

For our upcoming album Malediction, we composed the tracks in the rehearsal room as a group. We would start off with a riff, or an idea of how a riff should go. Then, we would build the song, riff by riff, as a group. Before we moved on to the next riff, we would all be in agreement with that part. It's different than how we did things before, and it really allowed us to craft each song organically.
Afterwards, we would review each song, and decided which parts were lame and needed to be axed, or which transitions needed to be smoothed out. Some songs were written in an hour, and others over the course of a few rehearsals.

Tell us about your lyrics, writing, inspiration etc.

For Malediction, we decided to come up with a story that revolves around a fictional evil entity, Saväel - the original source of pure darkness. The album explores his awakening, the destruction of the heavenly realms, and his reign over humanity. We wanted to creatively explore a twist on a common old-school theme. Inspiration came from the dark recesses of my own mind, a vast reserve of obscure horror flicks, and the horde of specters that haunt our rehearsal space.

Is there an ideology behind your band?

Fortunately, no.

How do you see the state of Death Metal music these days in your country and in general?

Death metal in Canada is pretty bitchin', if you ask me. We have a pile of ridiculously talented, and creative bands that continue to push the boundaries in extreme music. We hope that it continues, and we hope to be able to contribute to it in our own way.

What are your long term plans as a band? What do you want to achieve?

Our plan is to continue writing, and releasing as much new music as possible. Hopefully, people dig what we're doing, and allow us to keep doing so until we can't anymore.

Name an other Death Metal band from your country that everyone should hear.

Man, there are too many killers bands in Canada to single out a single one. Here's a very short list of bands that people ought to have on their CD rack:

Deamon, Fuck The Facts, Disciples of Power, Barra Xul, Neuraxis, Augury, First Fragment, The Unborn Dead, and our ladies in Fumigation.

MORTA SKULD

Who are you and what do you do in your band?

Dave Gregor Guitars and vocals

When/where was your band formed?

we formed in late 1989 in Milwaukee Wi

Why did you choose to play Death Metal?

It was a new music at the time and there were no rules like you didn't have to be good at solos and or be lead player, but if you were it was great. Just a music I could relate to and was where becoming a singer guitar player came into form for me. I could be myself and get that across to the fans.

How do you compose your music? Does only one guy do everything or does everyone contribute?

well over the years it has changed and evolved. what we do as of today is jam as a band and when we feel we are onto something we all jump in and start the process, very organic.

Tell us about your lyrics, writing, inspiration etc.

well I write about things in my daily life, whether good or bad. And I write about what we can all relate to, I like to just write about how I feel about a topic and or a experience I've  been through or going through.

Is there an ideology behind your band?

There is a Norse mythology  and three fates type of vibe from the research I've done in the past

How do you see the state of Death Metal music these days in your country and in general?

well it seems to be doing better these days but its hard all over and not like back in the day when you did a show and 300 kids show up and just tear it up, but its ok and can always be room to improve, also the state of the economy isn't the best and a lot of clubs are closing everyday. So its day by day

What are your long term plans as a band? What do you want to achieve?

We are in process of writing a new album and finding a new bass player. Later in the year we have two releases coming out on vinyl. We want to put out a good record for the fans to listen to and just be able to do what we do for the fans.

Name an other Death Metal band from your country that everyone should hear.

I really couldn't say I don't listen to a lot of death metal but the old classics.

HORRIFIED

Who are you and what do you do in your band?

Hails, I'm Dan Alderson and I play Guitar and Vocals in Horrified.

When/where was your band formed?

In 2012 I started jamming and writing material which would make up our first demo and some of it later making it to our debut album.
It started as a recording project towards the end of 2012, then after the release of the demo the project gained a lot of interest, including gig requests. We formed a line up and played our first gig late 2013, we've been a fully active band since.

Why did you choose to play Death Metal?

It wasn't really a choice, it just happened. Death Metal is my favorite style of metal (the more melodicly inclined) and it connects with me most on a personal and artistic level, it's what comes naturally to me as a player and writer so it isn't really forced.

How do you compose your music? Does only one guy do everything or does everyone contribute?

At the moment I write the majority of the material, but I've had friends over the internet contribute material and lyrics. The first album was actually fully composed over the internet, an online friend of mine wrote 3 of the songs on the album as at the time the band didn't have a full line up and we were just doing this for fun. The second album I wrote 90% of the material, but a good friend of mine Chris Foley from Starborn contributed the majority of the music for a song and the vocalist from Starborn, Bruce Turnbull helped me out with some lyric work. Now we have a stable line up, the music for whatever release we do after our second album will be more co written. As our new Gutiarist, Rob Hindmarsh. Shares a lot of the melodic metal influence in Death Metal as me, so I'm very excited to see what music our chemistry will bring!

Tell us about your lyrics, writing, inspiration etc.

When the band first started I was still pretty young (19) and I was always looking at bands / albums for inspiration. The second album was a lot different, I wrote the material after a lot of musical experience in other bands, not to mention painfull life experience. Now I look a lot more inwards for inspiration, which is good as I feel the material is a lot more unique for it. I am heavily influenced by literature, when I read a book that has a vast scope it makes me want to capture a similar sense of scope and that feeling of an intense journey you get from an epic. Lyrically the early stuff was rooted in gory, tounge in cheek esque stuff like on early Death albums, the band's lyrics have evolved and are much more meaningful, drawing heavy inspiration from personal experience and dark fantasy literature, such as the Elric series by Michael Moorcock and the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson.

Is there an ideology behind your band?

Nope.

How do you see the state of Death Metal music these days in your country and in general?

Death Metal is certainly alive these days, especially in the UK. We just played a weekend set of shows with some great UK DM bands and the turnouts were great and the enthusiasm was high.

What are your long term plans as a band? What do you want to achieve?

Thats hard to say, for now we just want to finish our second album and get it heard by as many people as possible. I think we'll always evolve and progress, the next album will be a massive step forward for us.

Name an other Death Metal band from your country that everyone should hear.

To many, so I'll break the rules. Plague Rider, Live Burial, Vacivus, Sheol, Uncoffinned and more.

MANIPULATION

Who are you and what do you do in your band?

We are Manipulation - crazy motherfuckers from Poland !
Rado.Slav - guitars
Vulture - guitars
Kriss - Drums
Bysiek - Bass guitar
Brużyc - Vocals

When/where was your band formed?

The band was formed in 11.09.2001

Why did you choose to play Death Metal?

We didn't choose this. We are metal heads from childhood times. When we formed a band, we want to play metal music, and we never calculate that the genre must be a death metal. For us is natural, what we can do that peoples names our music DEATH METAL ? hehe

How do you compose your music? Does only one guy do everything or does everyone contribute?

At the beginning mainly me (Rado.Slav) and Vulture (2001-2011). Same situation with lyrics, but from last 2 albums our drummer Kriss grow up very fast, his skills are already incredible, even on guitar not only as a drummer and he create most of riffs and most of our newest music. It's really nice when We came to his flat and he is showing new riffs what he come up :)))) We take everything from his ideas. He is like fucking metal riffs mine already, so We hope the resources of this mine will never end :) Also in new album half of lyrics was written by Swietobor Mytnik a guy outside of the band and few by me for example. Kriss can play guitar, bass, drums and also can sing, growl, scream - This guy is amazing ! :) At this moment I cannot imagine situation that I can create better stuff for the band than he. At the future we will see, You never know when the Wena comes.

Tell us about your lyrics, writing, inspiration etc.

Most of our lyrics are anti-religions, mainly anti-christian because we live in catholic country so this religion we can meet in our everyday life. This how religion use peoples, fanatics can do everything for things what they believe. But this is about all religions, they bring more bad than good things. Everybody can believe on everything but cannot force me or nobody else to believe in his religion and cannot harm any peoples because of this. The religion is actually a cause of a lot of wars worldwide. We also have some lyrics about existencial problems, politics, manipulations … that's it. I always try to have a double meaning lyrics. That kind of lyrics when every person can understand this by his own way.

Is there an ideology behind your band?

in short:
For us: Just we, it is Our passion. We love to play metal music. Ideology is simple: Go forward with all our ideas, never give up and be on the top of Our genre in the future !
For listeners: Open Your eyes and start to live your own life ! Do Your things, don't look back !

How do you see the state of Death Metal music these days in your country and in general?

The metal scene worldwide is huge and strong. Technology helping peoples to formed bands, showing their music in internet etc. Is a lot of amazing bands, players, compositors,
but the best can be only band who have some special thing, I don't know how to name this - but some factor because of which peoples want to listen Your band not 10 000 similar bands.

And this is actually thing which you cannot buy for any money, You cannot exercise this, and cannot plan this :). So You just need to do your job best as You can, looking for your best sound and don't care about nothing - all feedback etc. not depends from You. Metal fans choose their options how they feel it.

Huge amount of bands make a situation when on the stage/metal music market stay only strongest one, those that do not surrender for many years and do their own things. We already play metal since 2001 :)

What are your long term plans as a band? What do you want to achieve?

Find a label, make a new official video, in autumn time we will play our first tour in career in Poland so we want a lot of peoples in Our concerts.
Also first time we will be going abroad to play one festival in Spain. Our achieve is to gather more and more Manipulation fans around the world and start to playing concerts for them :) This is Our fucking Dream !

Name an other Death Metal band from your country that everyone should hear.

Of course we have a lot of good bands in Poland, and most of them I no need to recommend because everybody knows that bands.
My types are: Decapitated, Lost Soul, Behemoth, Materia and Disloyal ! (especially check last one Disloyal: Our drummer is there a vocalist)

FRAGILE EXISTENCE

Who are you and what do you do in your band?

I'm Matt, I play bass in Fragile Existence. Our full lineup is:

Dan Glover - Guitars/Lead Vocals
Eric Machacek - Guitars/Backing Vocals
Morten Siersbaek - Drums
Matt Hems - Bass

When/where was your band formed?

The band was formed by Dan in 2007. It originally started as a side project to his other (previous) band but after his departure he decided to make it a full time gig. Eric joined soon after that and performed on the first album, 2012's "Departing The Damned". Morten and I joined in 2013 and have been with the band ever since, including appearing on the new album "Cataclysms and Beginnings".

Why did you choose to play Death Metal?

We choose to play Metal we enjoy. There is no real conscious decision to make it "Death Metal" specifically, just a shared desire to play heavy, intense, extreme music. Some people call us "Death/Thrash Metal", some call us "Melodic Death Metal", some call us "Old School Death Metal"… we just call us "Fragile Existence".

How do you compose your music? Does only one guy do everything or does everyone contribute?

The songwriting process always starts on guitar, usually with Dan however Eric has been contributing quite a bit lately as well. Once an idea has come forward we bring it into the rehearsal room and everyone starts working on fleshing it out. Morten adds beats, I come up with a bassline, and everyone bounces structural ideas back and forth until the song feel complete.

Tell us about your lyrics, writing, inspiration etc.

Since Dan is the principle singer he writes all the lyrics, regardless of who has composed the song. The themes are always perspectives and opinions of his, with the subjects ranging from politics to history, personal/family struggles, and even science and the future of our species.  We don't tend to deal too much in fantasy subjects, or gore/shock lyrics. That stuff's already been done by bands who are far better at it than we would be.

Is there an ideology behind your band?

The basic theme behind the band is pretty well indicated by the name. Examining life here on our planet, the struggles and pitfalls of our species, and our role in the greater Universe around us. Our general philosophy is that we don't really need to write about things such as zombies or serial killers, real life is more than brutal enough.

How do you see the state of Death Metal music these days in your country and in general?

Here in Canada the city of Montreal has always been the National Capital of Death Metal. Our countries biggest DM bands such as Cryptopsy, Kataklysm, Neuraxis, and Beyond Creation have all come from there, and they receive a ton of local support.
Where we live here in Toronto, Death Metal is far less popular and we're definitely much more of an underdog band on the local scene. We'll always keep playing the music we love though, whether we have 2000 fans or 20. Or 2.

What are your long term plans as a band? What do you want to achieve?

Having just put out a new album our current plans are to hit the road and play for as many people as possible, in as many cities as possible. Naturally we plan to record a follow-up but that is not a priority at the moment. The writing process never stops, however, and new songs are already being composed.
In the meantime, we hope to visit everyone who's reading this in your hometowns, and play some awesome gigs!

Name an other Death Metal band from your country that everyone should hear.

Our brothers in Deamon from Ottawa ON are an awesome band! Very brutal and intense stuff! They've been on a bit of a hiatus over the past couple years but are now back with a new lineup and definitely worth checking out! Show them some love!

DEMIURGON

Who are you and what do you do in your band?

Hi. I'm Riccardo "Valentz" Valenti, the drummer

When/where was your band formed?

As Demiurgon we arrived in 2014, but we rise from the ashes of Hatred born in 2003. We changed name and bass player

Why did you choose to play Death Metal?

We all have been involved in this kind of music since we where young, so it has been a normal path for us. We all listen to different kind of music and this is good to grow together whit different ideas

How do you compose your music? Does only one guy do everything or does everyone contribute?

Normally I compose with Emanuele ( guitar ), we start from an idea or a single riff, sometimes we jam for growing interplay and here some ideas come to life

Tell us about your lyrics, writing, inspiration etc.

Lyrics, apart Rex mundi, are all inspired to the world around us. Evil inside man that destroy other lifes, nature. Society changes human mentality. The daily war to survive in this slime

Is there an ideology behind your band?

Nothing

How do you see the state of Death Metal music these days in your country and in general?

Here in Italy in the last years has been really interesting, there are a lot of good bands with good musicians, like Septical gorge, Hour of penance, Hateful, Hideus divinity, Subhuman, Sickening and so on. Check them out.... In general I think death metal ( like all extreme metal ) is moving a little toward the abyss as years ago, because there are too many bands that release cd every day. But certainly it'll come back stronger then before, because death metal is death metal haha

What are your long term plans as a band? What do you want to achieve?

We hope funs and people we'll enjoy the new release, meanwhile we'll continue to promote it on stage in Italy and abroad and write new material for the next album.
We should release a split in september with another Italian band, but it's early to talk about it.
