OVERTORTURE

Who are you and what do you do in your band?

My name is Joel Fornbrant and I do the vocals in Overtorture.

When/where was your band formed?

Overtorture was founded in Stockholm in the fall of 2011 by myself, Magnus Martinsson, Fredrik Widigs and Jonas Torndal. Andreas Hemmander joined on guitar shortly after and we found current bass player Joakim Antman right after doing the first album. Our current drummer Oscar joined us late in 2013.

Why did you choose to play Death Metal?

Because we love it! We grew up listening to the stuff and want to help keep the tradition alive. That and for all the women.

How do you compose your music? Does only one guy do everything or does everyone contribute?

Magnus does almost all of the music, with Andreas and Joakim contributing with a riff here and there (so far). I write the lyrics.

Tell us about your lyrics, writing, inspiration etc.

I often start with a title that has a certain feeling to it and then go from there. It's mostly about inner torment and the decay of society. If I read a really good book or watch a good movie I might take inspiration from that. Sometimes I have lyric ideas lying around for years before I write them down for a song.

Is there an ideology behind your band?

Our ideology is play loud, drink beer and have a good time. There's a dark theme to the lyrics and imagery and if people are into that, that's great. But we don't have any agenda beside playing the music we like.

How do you see the state of Death Metal music these days in your country and in general?

I think it's great. There are shitload of bands and a lot of people into the music as well. Though it's not a new genre anymore by a long shot it feels very much alive and healthy.

What are your long term plans as a band? What do you want to achieve?

We take it one step at a time, but right now we're looking to get out to play more and then we'll start doing a new album when the time is right. We want to build a solid foundation and then take it from there and hopefully we're still alive and headbanging 10 years from now.

Name an other Death Metal band from your country that everyone should hear.

Usurpress from Uppsala. Just awesome.

CORPSE GARDEN

Who are you and what do you do in your band?

My name is Federico Gutierrez, I play guitars in CORPSE GARDEN.

When/where was your band formed?

Somewhere around 2009 in Heredia, Costa Rica.

Why did you choose to play Death Metal?

It had a lot to do with the aggressiveness and technical approach to the instrument and music that drag me towards playing in a Death Metal band. Later on, it had a lot to do with creating obscure sounds and riffs.

How do you compose your music? Does only one guy do everything or does everyone contribute?

We get together to develop an idea and work on it. So every song has every member's input at somepoint. When it's finished we move on to the next and so on and so forth.

Tell us about your lyrics, writing, inspiration etc.

The lyrics and concept behind the music are something very important to us, since it's the element that carries on the message. On ENTHEOGEN we focus on the occult, particularly on the Great Work of the Alchemical Science and we combine it with the studies of Carl Jung on Individuation.

As far as inspiration goes, there are just too many bands but to name a few: Morbid Angel, Neurosis, Gorguts, Deathspell Omega, Incantation, Swans, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, King Crimson.

Is there an ideology behind your band?

There is not an specific ideology behind the band but I guess you can say that we try to experiment a lot with sounds and the music, and we want to keep on doing that; to push the boundaries of our creativity everytime, to always put ourselves out of our comfort zones. That is the ideology behind the band.

How do you see the state of Death Metal music these days in your country and in general?

Death Metal has always been there in the undergound, strong as it ever so in general I've seen it's in an active state (as far as I know) with new bands coming out such as Artificial Brain, Dead Congregation, Ulcerate and Nero di Marte to name a few. In Costa Rica, it's pretty solid, you get bands like: Inhuman, Insepulto and Pseudostratified Epithelium that put out records this year and they're great.

What are your long term plans as a band? What do you want to achieve?

We just hope to continue making music that is different within the genre, keep getting better at it and tour as much as we possibly can.

Name another Death Metal band from your country that everyone should hear.

Inhuman.
