My name is Matti, I play the guitar and handle backing vocals.
When/where was your band formed?
Corpsessed was formed sometime in 2007 in Järvenpää, Finland. I had met Jussi-Pekka (drums) and Niko (vocals) a year earlier when we played in this grind band together for a short period. When that group folded, we decided to form a band of our own that would concentrate more on serious and dark Death Metal. I asked my friends Jyri (guitar) and Mikko Mäkelä (bass) to join in, and the band was born.... The first few years were rather rough though, and we were still finding our own path and voice. Mikko Mäkelä left the group shortly after and in 2009 we got Mikko Pöllä as our bass player. This was also when things started to crystallize more and we started preparing our first demo... this ended up being "The Dagger & The Chalice" EP (released in 2011) on Dark Descent Records. After that we have continued our onslaught on different live arenas and recordings ...
Why did you choose to play Death Metal?
The choice was obvious. I have loved Death Metal since the early 90´s and the darkness in the music talks to me in a fervid frenzy - there was no other option than to answer the call and submit yourself to it.
4. How do you compose your music? Does only one guy do everything or does everyone contribute?
I compose most of our music, though the other guys contribute riffs as well and we arrange the songs together with the whole of the band. The process itself varies from song to song. Sometimes I bring full demos of new songs to the rehearsals and we start arranging them as a band, or sometimes we start jamming new riffs together and let them naturally evolve into new song structures.
Tell us about your lyrics, writing, inspiration etc.
The lyrics are mostly written by me and our drummer Jussi-Pekka. We find inspiration in really different topics ... I write more morbid stories inspired by darkness and death worship, Lovecraftian horrors, the occult and darker aspects of life. Jussi's lyrics are perhaps more personal in some respect, dealing with his experiences or views in life, or just horrid tales as well from the dark side of human existence.
How we see the lyrics, is that they must go hand in hand with the feeling of the song and evoke similar (dark) imagery.
Is there an ideology behind your band?
The main ideology within the band would be to write music that speaks to us. We all have our own individual views and how we see life. We don't want to represent anything political, nor wish to be seen as some brotherhood that follows a strict dogma under the banner of Corpsessed .... We are who we are, what unites us is death.
How do you see the state of Death Metal music these days in your country and in general?
Death Metal had quite of a resurgence during the past 5 or so years, in Finland as well as in other countries... Perhaps currently we have passed the highest crest of the wave, but that remains to be seen. Anyways, we saw many new and young bands being born, and also many old bands rising from their graves. It's a double edged sword really - we gained some new and vital blood into the scene (which is perhaps more alive now than ever before) and got to see some of the old favorites again. On the other side there are of course those ideas that were born dead and those that could have been left to rot, haha! But so it is with everything ... pick your favorites and listen to what resonates with you.
What are your long term plans as a band? What do you want to achieve?
No great plans... other than to write more songs that please us, and crush when playing live - that is where our band is at its best! On the stage. Hopefully get to tour Europe and perhaps the US at some point, who knows. Of course there are always plans and concepts brewing for the next releases, but we prefer to speak about them more when the time is right.
Name an other Death Metal band from your country that everyone should hear.
Just one? The elder gods Abhorrence / early Amorphis, early Sentenced, Demigod, Demilich, Belial and many more would of course receive a mention. Out of the new guard I'd mention Maveth, Stench of Decay, Vorum, Krypts ... and loads more but you probably know them already as well.
